THROUGH THE EYES OF SURVIVORS

‘Through Our Eyes’ is the lead exhibition at the Holocaust Centre North (‘HCN’). The exhibition focuses on the experiences of 16 survivors and families connected to the Holocaust Survivor’s Friendship Association (‘HSFA’), within the wider context of the rise of anti-semitism across Second World War Europe.

A moving, reflective and educational experience, we worked with Holocaust survivors and their families, PLB design and artist Jenny Kagan to help reflect in the visitor’s eyes, the stories and emotions of the survivors’ darkest moments and survival. Creating a range of AV we all hoped to bring the humanity to the visitor and encourage thoughts and questions on how the future must be better.

EXPERIENTIAL FILM

We produced a thought-provoking, creatively artistic, mixed media film designed from the raw focus of survivor voices and oral testimony, as well as seven emotive themes devised by them. Intended to make the visitor feel unsettled, even uncomfortable, the film is projection mapped against four walls - 12 metres - moving between them all and building a sense of disorientation and concern. A new musical score to match the context and unsettling nature of this film, accompanies, fitting within a wider exhibition soundscape.

LIFE BEFORE

Sensitively graded, coloured and edited archive stills and films – a looping projection mapped montage of community life interspersed between a wall of graphic images. An ambient soundscape of laughter, child noises and joyful Jewish songs accompanies.

INFOGRAPHIC STORIES

Animated infographic maps show advancing divisions, changing borders, population movement, key individuals and more. Carefully designed to match the contemporary look and personal feel of the exhibition, whilst delivering vast information on a memorable scale.

INTERACTIVE MEMORY

AY-PE created several touchscreen digital interactives including an attractive  ‘Pinterest’ style explorer of  survivor interviews and a  searchable Memorial Book. Swipe-able pages lead into CMS driven content to tell the stories of many who are alive and deceased. The CMS provides the exhibition with the ability to update the content, as more stories and resources are collected.
