TURN IT UP: THE POWER OF MUSIC

Science Museum Group's Turn it Up exhibition is a world-leading, one of a kind exploration of the science of music's hold over us and how it drives us to create, perform, feel and share. AY-PE were honoured to design the exhibition approach to sound and to design the gallery wide soundscapes, bespoke pieces and film edit for Turn It Up.

Initially created by and delivered for Manchester's Science & Industry Museum in 2022/23, the exhibition has attracted fantastic reviews and praise from press and public, meaning SMG transferred it to London at the Science Museum from late 2023.

AUDIO COLLAB

Working closely with the Science Museum Group teams, consultant Dr Emily Scott-Dearing, designers, hardware and fit-out - a flow of evocative, emotive sound carries visitor's ears and hearts through the exhibition. AY-PE partnered with longtime collaborators WMP to advise, develop and deliver a myriad of sounds to suit the psychological intentions of multiple areas and soundscapes.

SOUND DESIGN

Turn it Up was designed in two halves: the first looks at the innate human urge to create music and where our ingenuity and technological innovation have led, the second is more reflective, thinking about the effect music has on us as individuals. AY-PE sound compositions worked with these altering intentions, as well as balancing with the sounds of the unique tactile and interactive exhibits designed by specialist artists such as Amigo Amigo (aside).

VISUAL SOUND

Clips of incredible musicians feature in a bright, bold, motion graphic AV which marries with the exhibition brand and colouring. Unique shapes and motions bespoke to each artist and instrument, visually represent the exquisite sounds.
