For Christmas 2020 and 2021 AY-PE worked with York Museums Trust to create unique Christmas experiences for their visitors, within York Castle Museum's iconic 'Kirkgate' street.
Tasked to convert the museum's indoor Victorian street into a winter spectacle of intoxicating sound, lighting, set-looks and visuals, AY-PE designed the full experience from concept to install.

MAGIC & WONDER
The first show was based on a bright, playful, kaleidoscopic treatment of the Nutcracker. 3D projection mapped around the various features of the street’s focal end wall, a magical interpretation of Tchaikovsky's music sweeps around the snowy street, enveloping visitors below in the mysteries of the night before Christmas.
For the next Christmas show, we worked with the museum’s curators and developed a beautiful animation in keeping with their Victorian child’s cardboard theatre collection. The projected street wall tells a hopeful fairytale, with a bespoke festive composition surround sound, voiceover narrative as well as motion archive, newly illustrated and animated card theatre characters.
As experience designers we consulted on the project from the ground up. We worked with YMT to assess the site opportunities and obstacles. We worked with YMT to find the correct set products eg snow which respected their street's preservation and conservation.
3D set pieces were designed and either hung from the ceiling or studded the fake snow-lined streets. For festive authenticity, real Christmas trees were arranged. The Victorian cobbled street transformed into a magical winter wonderland.
