SHOWCASING ARTISTIC DIVERSITY
Fabrication is a store in the heart of York, housing dozens of small creative enterprises whose work is usually encountered only once you step into the store.
We saw an opportunity to make their stories visible to a much wider audience by transforming an ordinary shopfront into a space for discovery.
The “Compulsive Art” installation reimagined Fabrication’s window as a living, animated experience - one that revealed the breadth of talent inside whilst stopping passers by in their tracks, inviting them to look closer. Coinciding with the internationally attended Aesthetica Film Festival, the installation was a primary feature in the 'Fringe' experience.
We then collaborated again for a breathtaking winter window, where projected interactive snow falls down the Fabrication designed 'Winter Queen's' dress - a stunning artwork which dominates the window. Gestures from people in the street wipe the snow away from her gown, revealing beautiful animations below.

COLLABORATION
Guiding the material choice of the Winter Queen’s dress we worked with costume designer Dawn Wood to make a street-stopping piece of Christmas beauty.
The interactive snowflakes catch passing eyes. The gesture tech interaction ignites physical and cognitive connection. The ‘big reveal’ typography and artistic animations which follow the snow ‘clearance’ of the the dress, then signpost to a separate immersive Christmas experience for visitors - falling under the same ‘Winter Queen’ brand.
For 'Compulsive Art' we collaborated
closely with Fabrication to understand the range of independent makers they support - from textiles and jewellery to illustration, printmaking and craft.
PLACEMAKING
We developed a projection-based and mapped installation with motion imagery, layered film fragments and responsive light sequences. These captured the energy, texture and individuality of the artists working within Fabrication’s space, with dozens of products, viewpoints and craft-skills represented.
The installation ran into the night, inviting people to stop, watch and discover - an influential, cultural moment encountered simply by walking past.
The projects help strengthen the high street - adding activity, interest and encouragement to make art and to explore more inside Fabrication. They also demonstrate how digital storytelling and place-based creativity can elevate independent businesses, giving them visibility in a way that aligns with how people naturally explore streets, shops and public spaces.
